With longer days on their way, it’s almost time for after-school rides, weekend family adventures, and kids racing along with big smiles again.

Before the first big ride of the season, let’s make sure those bikes are ready to roll. Check out these top tips from our Technical Manager.

Bike Check: Quick At-Home Tips

After a long winter, bikes often need a little TLC. Here are a few easy things you can do at home:

1. Check the Tires
Pump them up to the recommended pressure for the riders weight and riding style. While you’re at it, look for cracks, worn tread, or slow leaks.

2. Test the Brakes
Squeeze the brake levers - they should feel firm, not squishy. For V-brakes, make sure the brake pads grip the rim evenly and stop the wheel smoothly. Disc brakes shouldn’t be squealing, this is a sign of contamination on the braking surfaces - consider cleaning up your rotor, trying new brake pads, or replacing with a new rotor.

3. Clean the belt, or lube the chain
If the chain or belt looks dry or is squeaking, it’s a sign that it needs some help. Belts can become a little noisy if they’re too tight or have grit in the teeth. Chains can sound dry and wear quicker without oil. The belts don’t need oil, but the cleaner they are, the better they look after the drivetrain. Clean with warm water. We are nearing the time of year where you can start using a thinner dry oil, rather than the full wet weather oil.

4. Tighten & Tune
Give the handlebars, seat, and pedals a quick check to make sure everything is secure. Kids grow quickly - you may need to raise the seat for a more comfortable ride!

5. Safety First
Check helmets for proper fit and condition. Perhaps a great time to add fresh grips or pedals? Check the end of the grips are safe and have no hole, and that the pedals are rotating smoothly without any rattles.
